Australia selects powerful team for hockey series against India 2022

Hockey news

It will be the first time the national team has competed in South Australia since 2009, when a 23-man player australian hockey the team assemble in Adelaide for the five-match Test series against India.

Following the conclusion of the Australian Hockey Championship in Bendigo last weekend, coach Colin Batch has picked the squad for Saturday’s opener.

Eddie Ockenden, who will play his 400th international game on Sunday, and Aran Zalewski will be the team’s co-captains.

Sam Collins, Tom Craig, Dylan Martin, Ben Rennie, Lachlan Sharp, Jack Welch and Ky Willott were also part of the team that won the Kookaburras their eighth consecutive gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Due to his upcoming wedding in Perth on Thursday, goalkeeper Andrew Charter will be absent for the first two games.

As the world’s No. 1 squad prepares for the World Cup in Odisha in January, Batch acknowledges that the fact that the whole group hasn’t been together since the CWG is a “complicated situation”.

We usually train together for a long time in Perth, but we haven’t all been together since the Commonwealth Games, so it’s a little different to how we usually prepare. To get it right quickly and re-establish communication, there’s a sense of urgency, according to Batch, who wants to guide Australia to their first World Cup victory since 2014.

“With this series against India, we can start. We have a lot of faith that we can do it. We won’t make many changes to our squad because it’s mainly preparation for the World Cup. A small group of our players are doing well and we think they can continue to do well. However, we would like to provide some possibilities.

“Before the World Cup, Australia will only play these five international matches. Conversely, a variety of different nations have participated in the Pro League. Late February marks the start of the Kookaburras’ Pro League season. India’s last meeting with Australia ended in a 0-7 defeat in the final of the CWG”.

“As our first Pro League games won’t be until the following year, these games against India form our World Cup training. We will be prepared for the World Cup when it comes, but we need to learn a lot from the matches against India and apply what we learned in our final weeks of preparation before we leave for the World Cup,” according to Batch.

The only international hockey competitions in Australia before the World Cup are these five games. In contrast, the Pro League has featured players from a variety of other nations. Only at the end of February do the Kookaburra start their Pro League season. India fell to Australia 0-7 in the CWG championship game when the sides last met.

“These games against India are our World Cup training because our first Pro League games are next year. We will be prepared for the World Cup when it comes but we need to learn a lot from the matches against India, use what we learned from them and use it in the final weeks of training before we leave for the World Cup,” said Batch.
