Cristiano Ronaldo and co. survive till late, fight to win the world cup opener

Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty was one of five second-half goals as Portugal beat Group H rivals Ghana to win their opener of the World Cup.

Attention has focused on Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Portugal’s World Cup opener after it was announced he has left Man Utd.

The 37-year-old had a goal disallowed for a first-half foul but opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 65th minute.

Ronaldo broke the ball at home after being brought down in the penalty area by Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu.

This goal set Ghana alive and Andre Ayew equalized from close range just eight minutes later.

Portugal looked to have taken the game away from Ghana shortly after though, when Joao Felix and Rafael Leao both scored within the space of two minutes.

However, Ghana did not rest when Osman Bukari brought the ball home before the sides played nine minutes of added time.

Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa gave Inaki Williams a huge chance to equalize just before the final whistle, but Portugal had a huge lead when the striker slipped and failed to find the net.
