Gilberto Ramirez enters overweight. Gabriel Rosado Fight cancelled

Posted 03/17/2023

There were more than a few people out there who were concerned about popular veteran Gabriel Rosado lining up this weekend against Gilberto Ramirez at California’s Long Beach State University. Rosado, while exciting to see in action, has accumulated a lot of wear over the years. It just didn’t seem right to critics that Ramirez, whose only loss came at the gloved hand of Dmitry Bivol, was the man Rosado should have to face. Rosado, after all, had decisively lost his last three fights. He was also moving up to light heavyweight to face Ramirez on Saturday.

It should come as no surprise then that some fans are quite happy to learn that the fight has been cancelled. Ramirez apparently came in overweight on Friday – much more weight if reports are to be believed – and the fight was subsequently called off. The match, which was scheduled to be streamed live on DAZN, was replaced by the Joseph Diaz, Jr. – Mercito Gesta match as tomorrow night’s main event. It goes without saying that DAZN will broadcast the Diaz-Gesta meeting live.

“No apologies,” Ramirez said via social media. “I had never lost weight in my 45 professional fights. This is the first and last time. I’ve always been proud to be a pro, but today wasn’t my finest hour. On that note, I’d like to apologize to all my fans and supporters, Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN for this unfortunate event. I never gave up trying to gain weight, cutting until the last moment, but I just couldn’t lose enough to make the weight contract. I am embarrassed and appalled by my actions and promise this will never happen again. I will make the right changes and will be back soon.
