Kane sinks Fulham to become Spurs’ top scorer in 2023

Kane sinks Fulham to become Spurs’ top scorer in 2023

Antonio Conte has vowed to “win something” under Harry Kane after the striker became Tottenham’s top scorer when his 266th goal for the club netted a vital 1-0 win against Fulham on Monday. England captain Kane scored on the stroke of half-time with a clinical strike from the edge of the penalty area at Craven Cottage.

Jimmy Greaves’ Tottenham record had remained unchanged since 1970, but Kane’s first goal in his last three appearances gave him a share of the historic achievement.

Kane played despite being ill with a fever and Tottenham boss Conte has admitted he is desperate to reward the selfless star with silverware.

Without a major trophy for club and country, Kane has been linked with Manchester United.

But Conte said: “Today was fantastic. I think he scored a fantastic goal, the execution, controlling the ball, then kicking it like that, only a world class striker can score this goal.

“Regarding the spirit I mentioned earlier, I want to point out that Harry played with a fever and he wasn’t that good, but he wanted to play because he understood the moment.

“He understood that he was a point of reference for us. I would certainly like to help him and me, also his team mates, to try to do something important, to win something with Tottenham because he loves Tottenham.

“Tottenham is in his heart and it should be nice if together we can win something, because then it’s important to have this record, but I think it could be more important if you win a trophy.”

Kane could break Greaves’ record in Tottenham’s next match in the fourth round of the FA Cup at second-tier Preston on Saturday.

It’s only a matter of time before Kane takes sole possession of Tottenham’s holiest record.

That stunning achievement would have seemed impossible during a rocky start to his career which featured several failed loan spells before he finally emerged as a star.

Greaves, who died at the age of 81 in 2021, is regarded as one of the most natural scorers in football history.

A member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning squad, which scored 44 for his country, Greaves is the top scorer in the history of England’s top flight with 357 goals.

For Kane, being alongside such a legendary player is a tribute to his predatory instincts and perseverance.

The 29-year-old is now one step away from becoming the third player to score 200 Premier League goals, after Alan Shearer (260) and Wayne Rooney (208).

Kane’s 18th goal

Kane also tied Rooney as England’s record goalscorer after he scored his 53rd international goal in a World Cup quarter-final defeat by France in December.

Thanks to Kane’s 18th goal in all competitions this season, fifth-placed Tottenham have reduced the gap to fourth-placed Manchester United to three points.

It was a much-needed result after back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Arsenal hurt Tottenham’s bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top-four finish.

Conte’s team had conceded 21 goals in their previous 10 league games.

So while Kane has rightfully taken the spotlight, Conte has been equally pleased with his players’ defensive resilience.

“It was a great victory. I’ve had a good response from my players. I asked them about the solidity of the last season and the will and the desire to fight and to be resilient.

Failing to convert first-half pressure into goals proved fatal for Fulham as Kane entered the record books in first-half stoppage time.

Turning on the edge of the Fulham box, Kane worked up a yard of space before firing a superb shot past Bernd Leno.

The goal to equal the record was met with sarcastic chants of ‘wonder of a season’ from Tottenham fans, who recalled the dubious response to his prolific first season for the club.

Kane nearly scored the outright in the second half, but Leno reversed his header from close range.
