Man Utd ‘reluctance’ for Ten Hag ‘obsession’ revealed as club scare repeats £30.75m ‘saga’

According to reports, Man Utd are «reluctant to play» for Tottenham Hotspur this summer due to Erik ten Hag’s interest in Harry Kane.

The Red Devils have progressed under Ten Hag but are not yet at the point where they can consistently challenge for the Premier League title.

One of their problems is their position as a striker. Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in December left them with only Wout Weghorst and Anthony Martial to choose from at forward.

Weghorst joined United on loan in January from Burnley and didn’t do enough to earn a permanent move to Old Trafford. Martial meanwhile missed much of this campaign with multiple injuries.

United’s main priority during this summer’s transfer window will be to recruit a new striker and Kane is a player they are connected with.

The England international is out of contract in 2024 and has yet to commit to his future with Spurs. Both behind the scenes and on the pitch, Tottenham are a shambles at the moment, so Kane cannot be blamed if he decides to pursue a move elsewhere.

The 29-year-old has been in top form this season, having scored 24 goals in 32 Premier League games.

Manchester Evening News they are reporting that Ten Hag «want to sign» Kane but Man Utd «are reluctant to get involved in a saga with Tottenham».

«United does not want to be involved in Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s matches», noted that he tends to «drag out deal negotiations involving Tottenham players».

The report points out that Man Utd have not signed anyone from Spurs since buying Dimitar Berbatov in 2008 for £30.75m. This deal was not finalized until the August deadline day.

The report adds: «Well-placed sources say Ten Hag is ‘obsessed’ with Kane, but United are also interested in prolific Napoli goalscorer Victor Osimhen.

United have had their eye on Eintracht Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani and Atalanta goalscorer Rasmus Hojlund, while Ten Hag is also an admirer of Benfica frontman Goncalo Ramos and Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus.

Former Spurs player William Gallas thinks Kane «will have to leave» the Premier League club this summer.

“I want Harry to have the experience of lifting a trophy. I want him to lift the Premier League trophy. Tottenham cannot give him this opportunity. Harry has never been a selfish boy; he always did what was asked of him and scored many goals for the club,” Gallas told Genting Casino.

The club has failed to give him what he wants. He has to go. You can see after that performance [the 6-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday], it was a bit embarrassing, for the players and for the fans. The team defended badly.»
