Nick Kyrgios ‘rises’ to join Team World for Laver Cup

Nick Kyrgios Is Happy After The Victory

Laver Cup champions Team World have been given a big boost ahead of this year’s tournament as Nick Kyrgios will once again be part of the squad.

Kyrgios was an ever-present member of John McEnroe’s Team World during the first four editions, but has skipped the 2022 event at London’s O2 Arena. Despite his absence, McEnroe’s men beat Europe 13-8 to win their first title.

The Australian, however, will return for the 2023 tournament, which will be held from September 22-24 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada.

«I’m motivated to be part of the world team,» said the world number 26. «As I’ve said many times before, a Canberra boy representing the world, he’s very special and I’m ready to go to war.»

He added: “It’s fantastic that the world of teams is finally united across the board. I’ve been a member of the team four times and we’ve come a long way since we’ve been close so many times.

«It’s special to know we can do it now. Hopefully, I’ll add to that team, not change the spirit too much, just add some positive vibes and see if we can do it again.»

Kyrgios holds a 1-4 record in singles at the Laver Cup and is 3-1 in doubles.

«Nick is one of the most talented guys on tour,» said McEnroe, the seven-time Grand Slam winner and team leader.

“We saw the level of tennis he can play at Wimbledon last year and we’re all looking forward to seeing him on court again soon. He brings great energy and passion. I am delighted to have him join the team in Vancouver.

Nick Kyrgios 2023 injury woes

The 27-year-old will be hoping the injury worries will be behind him by the time the Laver Cup begins, as he will not feature at a senior level until 2023.

He was due to start the season in the United Cup but withdrew due to a knee injury. He then played an exhibition match against Novak Djokovic before the Australian Open. However, on the eve of the tournament, he withdrew from the opening Grand Slam and underwent knee surgery.

The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up was originally expected to return in the Sunshine Double, but he missed both the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open and looks set to skip the French Open.

However, he is expected to play in an exhibition match against Holger Run on May 24 in Copenhagen.
