Shakur Stevenson faces Robson Conceicao in a twelve-round main event tonight in Newark’s Prudential Center in New Jersey. The fight will air live on ESPN and ESPN + starting at 10pm Eastern time. The 18-0 Stevenson was supposed to defend his WBO and WBC junior lightweight titles, but was stripped of those belts yesterday when he made it clear he couldn’t or wouldn’t lose the 1.6 pounds needed to maintain ownership of the belts him. The 17-1 Conceicao, on the other hand, can take possession of those belts if he were to defeat Stevenson tonight.

The truth is that the 2016 Conceicao gold medal is no joke. His only defeat was against Oscar Valdez and not everyone was comfortable thinking that the judges had awarded the right man that night. As for Stevenson, he has been hot (at least until yesterday), unifying the titles that have now been deprived of him only last April, when he beat the same Valdez who gave Conceicao his only defeat. Stevenson has made it clear that he will switch to lightweights after tonight. He may be his hometown favorite (after all he is originally from Newark), but it would be a real career success if Conceicao steps out of the ring with the WBC and WBO belts tonight.
