On April 18, 2023, it was announced that The First Slam Dunk, a new film based on the Slam Dunk manga by author and illustrator Takehiko Inoue, will be released this year in the United States.
National film company Cinemark has listed the film as scheduled to receive a release date for the region this year. However, the precise date is currently unknown.
The First Slam Dunk continues in the tradition of films such as One Piece Film: Red, Suzume no Tojimari and others that have enjoyed enormous success in theaters in the United States. The Demon Slayer: Mugen Train movie, first released in Japanese theaters in 2020 before being imported to the United States, is credited by fans as starting the current anime movie craze.

Fans in the US, however, aren’t sure if they’ll get the Japanese dub with English subtitles or a fully English-dubbed version.
Since its debut in December 2022, the film has grossed 12,943,919,490 yen, or just under $97 million, as of April 9. time. The film, which debuted at number one, sold 847,000 tickets and earned just under 1.3 billion yen in its first weekend.
Inoue wrote the screenplay for the film First Slam Dunk and personally directed it at Toei Animation. Yasuyuki Ebara (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress), character designer and animation director, and technical directors Naoki Miyahara, Toshio Ohashi and Yu Kamatani are additional crew members. Katsuhiko Kitada (Attack on Titan episode) is another member of the team.
During the summer at the latest, The First Slam Dunk will likely debut in the United States. Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume no Tojimari release window of Fall 2023 is also highly possible, allowing the buzz surrounding the film to fade away. While it’s doubtful, it would be great if one of the many anime films debuted #1 in the US.
Slam Dunk by Takehiko Inoue, who also wrote and illustrated, was first published in serial form in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from October 1990 to June 1996. The series was eventually made into an anime television series by Toei Animation which aired from October 1993 to March 1996 before being screened worldwide. Japan and numerous other Asian nations are big fans of the series.
