Manchester United urged to sign £50m Chelsea target but report reveals their ‘extreme caution’ over transfer

Man Utd have been encouraged to sign Brentford forward Ivan Toney as a potential alternative to Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.

The Red Devils are looking for a new striker ahead of this summer, with Wout Weghorst and Anthony Martial likely to leave the club.

They have been linked with Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, but Toney is a cheaper option if moves to other targets fail.

Toney has been in tremendous form for Brentford this season. He is among the top goalscorers in the Premier League with his 19 goals in 30 appearances.

Former Premier League forward Dion Dublin thinks Toney would «only get better» if he secures a move to Old Trafford.

“In my opinion, he is good enough to go play Manchester Unitedand I think it would only get better if he went there,» Dublin told William Hill.

«Erik ten Hag likes big forwards and need a proven scorer, so maybe they should look at Ivan Toney.»

A report from Football Attaché says Man Utd «remain interested» in Toney but are «concerned about making an offer».

United are «closely monitoring his availability» but «are extremely cautious about making a bid as its gambling investigation rumbles in the background».

It was reported last month that Toney «faces a lengthy ban» after he «pleads guilty» to «many» of the 262 gambling charges against him.

The report from Football Attaché he adds: ‘United are worried about making a high money offer only for Toney to be unavailable for much of a season due to his ban.

It is understood Brentford have demanded £50m for Toney ahead of the summer transfer window, and United would be tempted to match that fee were it not for the ongoing investigation.

«Chelsea are also interested in signing Toney this summer, while Newcastle were longtime admirers but recently dropped out of the race.»

Speaking earlier this month, Gabby Agbonlahor said Chelsea need either Toney or Romelu Lukaku next season.

“It’s just the end of Chelsea – it’s almost embarrassing when you look at them now,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

“Chelsea just need a striker. Having Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and not putting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the Champions League makes no sense to me.

“I would bring Lukaku back. Ivan Toney is also a big screamer. They need someone who scores for you, all kinds of goals and who has played in the Premier League.»
