Chilean star Cristian Garin had a confident victory over Swiss star Marc-Andrea Hussler at the Madrid 64 Open.
Their match marked the first time the players had faced each other in their careers, making for an uncertain matchup that was full of excitement.
The stars clashed for an exciting hour and 28 minutes before the Chilean emerged victorious 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
After Gary proved his skills on clay, the victory is not surprising. His season going into this match has seen him win four of his last six matches on clay, making him a definite favorite to win. However, in his previous match, he suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss to world number seven Holger Run in the quarter-finals in Munich.
The same cannot be said for Huesler, who has had a hard time competing on clay this season. His last five starts saw the 26-year-old secure just two wins before meeting Gary.
Husler started the game well, securing the first game of the game. He then went on to extend his lead to make it two games for three. Unfortunately, this saw the Chilean gain more pressure to get back into the game and eventually secure the victory.
Heusler sealed the victory after failing to return a perfect forehand shot, earning him a well-deserved roar from the fans.
Garin struggled to find a solution to convert his break points, but only managed to get three of the eight available.
Amazingly, Hussler was able to keep his focus on the break points and secure one of the two. However, this was not enough to win the game.
Garin will face 27th seed Miomir Kekmanovic tomorrow. Kekmanovic has shown his ability to play on clay, winning six of his last nine matches against Liu. Unfortunately for the Serbian star, his last result was a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 loss to Serbia’s Duzan Lajovic in the semi-finals of the Banja Luka Open.
An exciting event awaits the 26-year-old to continue his amazing career on clay.
