Alan Shearer and Ian Wright have suggested Manchester United consider replacing David de Gea if they feel goalkeeper is a priority position in the summer.
De Gea is one of United’s longest serving players, having made more than 500 appearances for the club. This has seen him have some very good moments, such as winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup on two occasions and the Europa League.
Although he has been an integral part of the team for years, he has come under criticism in recent times.
Indeed, United lost 1-0 to West Ham United in their last game, with De Gea taking center stage after spilling a rather tame Said Benrahma shot into the back of the net.
The defeat meant fourth-placed United are now just a point above Liverpool, even though they have a game in hand. Wright thinks the Champions League should be on their mind, with this mistake potentially fatal in reference to their qualification for the tournament.
«At some point, Manchester United will have to look at that position,» he said on Premier League Productions.
“Sometimes the concentration is not there. Is this a priority position for them? Maybe it isn’t. But that goal could cost him the Champions League.»
Along with the position inquiry, Wright believes other teams should do what they can to capitalize on playing against De Gea.
“Every time you put bodies around him, he gets very, very shaky. I still can’t figure out why teams don’t put swing angles on him every single occasion. He is never comfortable in that situation.
Wright’s fellow pundit Shearer is of the opinion that United should consider signing a new goalkeeper, although with the caveat they will realistically look at other positions in front of the goalkeeper.
“He was an absolute screamer and his mistake cost his team a point today. It’s not even the first mistake he’s made this season,” he said.
“It has happened too many times this season. It’s a problem for Manchester United because they’re making too many.
“What they will have to look at in the summer is do they view this as a priority position or are there more important positions to look at?
«We don’t know how much they will have to spend but I’m sure there are concerns in the management about the mistakes he keeps making.»
