«It was fun while it lasted,» Gervonta Davis told the assembled media following her stunning and brilliant seventh-round knockout of Ryan Garcia. «I enjoyed every moment.» Surprisingly enough, Davis clarified that there was no bad blood between him and Garcia, although some profanity was shared between the two fighters prior to the fight. «It’s cool,» Davis said of the matter. He might be soft-spoken in a press conference, but Davis is fierce in the ring. Perhaps more importantly, however, is the fact that he’s also smart in the ring.
«I felt like he was more anxious than me,» she said of Garcia. «You want to keep calm at all costs and you don’t want to make a bad decision.» It was that maturity that seems to have led Davis to the win against Garcia on Saturday. While Garcia got too anxious at times, Davis was able to keep his composure and perform consistently throughout the fight. When Garcia went strong in the second, for example, Davis simply weathered the storm, picked his shot, and put his man on the mat with blinding speed, efficiency, and power. Garcia got back on his feet, but was unable to learn from his mistake. He was down and out a few rounds later.
Of course Davis has said for a while that Garcia just wasn’t in the same talent pool that he was. And on Saturday Davis proved it. He employed a brilliant strategy, Davis did it. By remaining mobile, he prevented Garcia from landing his dreaded left hand. Davis also allowed himself to place his shots effectively. While some might blame a rehydration clause in the fight contract for Garcia’s knockout, the hard truth is that the popular Californian has simply come across a better fighter. In fact, Davis is that good.
And now the world knows it.
