Gervonta Davis knocks out Ryan Garcia with a body shot in the seventh round

It was the biggest boxing fight presented in years. Multi-time undefeated Gervonta Davis put his 28-0 record on the line facing another undefeated star, the popular 23-0 Ryan Garcia. There were no titles at stake in the scheduled 12 rounds because frankly there was no need. Davis and Garcia were stars, plain and simple: young, punchy, fast, insanely confident stars. There were rumors that the winner was likely to become the face of boxing.

The first round saw Garcia begin throwing the jab at his opponent. That jab essentially told the story of the chapter, as each fighter was rightfully wary of the other. Garcia opened up in the second, firing fast, hard jabs at his man. Davis, meanwhile, employed lateral footwork. Davis also started holding quite a bit. Then, just when it looked like he might be in trouble, Davis knocked Garcia down with a beautiful left foot that landed in the face. Garcia got up, but Davis had proved a big point very early.

Davis had an effective and aggressive third, pushing the play and landing well sometimes with a straight left. Fourth was close, though it appeared Davis took the chapter simply by beating his man to the beat. Garcia also seemed to have a hard time reaching the shorter man with these shots. The fifth was a very sharp deal. Davis landed hard on the body and had a few violent outbursts. Garcia on the other hand pulled off his jab pretty well.

Garcia rocked his man hard in the sixth. He was also smart enough to avoid getting into a slug-like feat with the menacing Davis. In response, Davis landed a good stomach. Garcia was doing well going into the seventh when he shocked everyone by going down seconds after receiving a blow to the body from Davis. Needless to say, Garcia couldn’t beat the count. It was kind of a Davis performance.

“Everything was exciting man. I was thrilled to be a part of this event,” Davis said later. “The job is never done until I retire. I will keep my head down, stay humble, and keep putting in the work. For his part, Garcia was gracious in defeat. «Tank is a great fighter. Hats off to him,» he said. «I was honored to be in the ring with such a great fighter and I respect him a lot.»
