Watch: Colin de Grandhomme bowled to Essex batsman Matt Critchley ‘inappropriately’ and conceded five penalty points in Lancashire’s clash with Essex in the 2023 County Championship.
In the 26th over of Essex’s first innings Colin de Grandhomme bowled a ball of good length to the center stump which was punched back to the bowler by Critchley. De Grandhomme picked up the ball in his pass and rethrown it to the batter who, to protect himself, played a textbook defensive shot.
Essex were awarded five penalties for this seemingly innocuous play, under 42 of the MCC Laws of Cricket.
What is Law 42?
Law 42 deals with unacceptable conduct on the cricket field. It covers four levels of offense which carry varying degrees of penalties and penalties.
De Grandhomme’s act falls under a level 2 infringement, which includes among others the act of «throwing the ball at a player, referee or other person in an inappropriate and dangerous manner».
Rule 42.3.2 states that in the event of a Level 2 infringement, «the referee shall award five penalty points to the opposing team» and «the referee shall notify the captain of the offending player that any future Level 1 infraction by any member of your team will result in a five-point penalty being awarded to the opposing team.’
De Grandhomme was quick to raise his hand in apology after the shy, which was just bowling at a vicious pace.
The five penalties didn’t matter in the larger scheme of things, as the game ended in a draw. Essex took a narrow lead of 12 runs in the first innings, but Lancashire responded well in the second to amass 351-7, setting a target of 340 for the hosts, who finished the fourth innings on 128-4. The highlight of the match however was Jimmy Anderson sending off Sir Alastair Cook twice.
