Newcastle United urged to sign ‘stagnant’ Arsenal defender and ‘grumpy’ Man City forward

Stan Collymore thinks Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney would be «really good» for Newcastle United next season if he signs for Eddie Howe’s side.

The Scotsman has initially performed well for Arsenal following his £25m transfer from Celtic ahead of the 2019/20 season.

His potential progress over the past two years has been hampered by injuries. He was unavailable for much of last season and has slipped behind Oleksandr Zinchenko in the pecking order this season.

Tierney is expected to leave Arsenal this summer so he can play more consistently. Newcastle United are one of the clubs interested in the defender.

The Magpies will have to strengthen this summer in view of their probable return to play in the Champions League.

Collymore thinks Tierney has «stagnant» of late but would be a «really good player» for Newcastle.

“I really like Kieran Tierney. When he first moved from Celtic to Arsenal, a lot of comparisons were drawn between him and Liverpool’s Andy Robertson,” Collymore told Caught Offside.

“Robertson obviously kicked off and grew up to be a real world class left back and Tierney has been sidelined a bit with injuries and fitness issues.

“However, I still think that at the age of 25 and with Howe’s outstanding one-on-one coaching methods there is still plenty of time for the Scotsman to enjoy the same kind of success as the Liverpool number 26.

“If Newcastle have the money at their disposal to look for quality players in the summer then there is absolutely no reason why they shouldn’t go out and get Tierney. He would be a really good player for them: he would offer a very good balance, he loves going forward but he is also solid in defence”.

Newcastle are likely to be added to their squad in several positions and Collymore believes they should also «seriously consider» the signing of Riyad Mahrez from Man City.

This transfer will be more difficult to pull off, especially after his hat-trick against Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend.

City boss Pep Guardiola recently admitted that Mahrez is sometimes «grumpy» with him and Collymore believes Newcastle should «do everything for him».

«Riyad Mahrez is another player I think Newcastle should seriously consider,» added Collymore.

“I know he’s played a fair amount of football this season, probably more than he expected, but with Jack Grealish being the younger of the two, plus what they’ve paid for him, I can’t see him as a player who’s moved. while, I think Mahrez could be made surplus to requirements under Pep Guardiola.

«If that’s the case, Newcastle should be doing everything for him – I’d be amazed if they weren’t already to be honest.»
