Man Utd are considering making a bid for Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez this summer, according to reports.
The Red Devils are still looking to replace Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese international left Old Trafford at the end of November following a controversial interview with Piers Morgan.
Wout Weghorst was brought on as a temporary substitute in January with the Netherlands international joining from Burnley on loan until the end of the season.
The Dutchman is unlikely to be part of Erik ten Hag’s plans, who will now be looking to add a world-class striker to their ranks in the summer.
Widespread rumors said he is now their top priority for the upcoming transfer window with Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos among the names connected.
And now Football Attaché to state that there was a ‘Significant update’ in the Red Devils’ pursuit of Inter Milan striker Martinez with Man Utd actively monitoring the situation’ of the Argentine international.
Man Utd have been hot on his trail for several years with the 25-year-old consistently scoring in Serie A for Inter Milan and, with the Red Devils set to pull the plug on their pursuit of Osimhen due to its “exorbitant” price.the Premier League side think a deal for Martinez “might be easier to do”.
Football Insider added that Martinez “would be priced lower” than Osimhen and Inter “will have to balance the books if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League”.
Milan and Atalanta are in contention to knock Inter Milan out of fourth place with four games remaining in the Serie A season, while they also face rivals Milan in the Champions League semi-final tonight.
Man Utd boss Ten Hag recently outlined what he wants in a new striker signed this summer with goal at the top of his list of desirable attributes.
“Everyone is different, of course, but for a striker the main thing is to score goals by any method, which is way ahead of anything else,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports.
“We need a striker who scores goals because we have ability in the team to put balls into the box, so we need a striker to finish.
“We have to build a new future and we need a striker who not only scores but contributes by linking play together very well and pressing, which is very important.”
